2022 Audi Q4 e-tron Review
The New Q4 e-tron Is an Affordable Luxury EV
What is the Q4 e-tron?

The 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron aims to be a tech-heavy electric crossover with the premium look and feel we've come to expect from the luxury automaker. As the name suggests, the Q4 e-tron sits below the Q5 SUV in terms of length, but only by a few inches. That should ensure the Q4 e-tron is easy to drive in the city while leaving space for a sizable battery pack for decent range.

The Q4 e-tron will have a fight on its hands when it hits showrooms at the end of 2021. Tesla's Model Y is already a well-established player in the space, and similarly priced rivals including the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Volvo XC40 Recharge will be in the mix as well.

What's under the Q4 e-tron's hood?

The Q4 e-tron's floor-mounted battery pack (82 kWh gross, 77 kWh net) is paired to an electric motor at the rear wheels that produces 201 horsepower. If that seems a little underwhelming, you can opt for an all-wheel-drive version with an additional motor at the front axle. Audi says combined output stands at 295 hp, but we'd be surprised if it isn't a little more. The Volkswagen ID.4 uses the same basic setup and produces 302 hp in its AWD configuration. The Q4 e-tron won't be blazing fast, but acceleration should be sprightly given its compact SUV footprint.

No official EPA range estimates are available yet, but Audi claims the rear-drive Q4 e-tron will be able to travel about 250 miles on a full charge. That's about the going range for compact SUV EVs these days, with the Volkswagen ID.4, Chevrolet Bolt EUV and Kia Niro EV all offering similar range estimates. Premium electric vehicles such as the Polestar 2 Performance and Audi's midsize e-tron SUV offer slightly less range, at 233 and 222 miles, respectively. How's the Q4 e-tron's interior?

The Q4 e-tron won't deviate from Audi's tech-forward design philosophy. A 10.25-inch digital instrument panel sits in front of the driver, while the newest version of Audi's MMI infotainment interface is housed in a centrally located 10.1-inch touchscreen. Also new for the Q4 e-tron is a head-up display that projects an image designed to appear 30 feet in front of the vehicle, reducing the amount of the driver's attention taken away from the road. Audi is choosing Sonos for the Q4 e-tron's sound system, marking the first time the manufacturer has produced an audio system for an automobile.

In terms of interior space, Audi says the Q4 e-tron's cabin will feel roomier than that of the Q5 due to the elimination of the central transmission tunnel. For an extra wow factor, a steering wheel with flat surfaces both top and bottom will be available.

EdmundsEdmunds says

If you're looking for a wallet-friendly premium electric vehicle, you might find it in the 2022 Audi Q4 e-tron. We're already impressed by the Volkswagen ID.4 — which shares a battery pack and motors with the Q4 e-tron — and we expect even greater things from the Audi version.
